Can You Do Your Own Electrical Work

This is a frequently asked question I get from homeowners trying to save money by doing their own electrical work. I have good news and bad news for you.

First the good news.

Yes, you can do your own electrical work in the state of Georgia, if you are the homeowner, have the skills and expertise, and pull the necessary permits. So yes you can save some money if you do the work yourself.

Now for the bad news…

You cannot permit work on a project that you plan to resell. If you are a home flipper and not a licensed electrician, you cannot do the work on this property.

Secondly, you cannot pull a permit on a project for someone else to perform the work. When hiring an electrical contractor, this is a major red flag that the individual you are talking to is not a licensed electrical contractor in the state of Georgia. They know that they cannot pull the necessary permits. They will say it is cheaper if you as the homeowner get the necessary permits. This is not true. It costs the same

Here is the downside to doing your own electrical work.

Your work is subject to the same inspections that we a licensed electrician face. You will not be able to close the walls until you pass inspection. The inspector may be present while you do your work. This is done to ensure that you the homeowner and not n unlicensed contractor does the work. If it is determined that you pulled the permits for an unlicensed electrical contractor to perform the work, you will be required to have the work removed and replaced by a licensed contractor. Now you get to pay for this project twice.

Here is the biggest reason why you shouldn’t do your own electrical work.

Safety.

A house fire started behind the wall of a basement bedroom that was wired in the seventies by the previous homeowner. The homeowner at that time spliced two cables together in an open junction box and then sealed it behind the paneling. That little mistake could have had tragic results. Faulty wiring like this example results in over 51, 000 house fires annually in the US.

There is a solution.

Elco-Tech Electrical, Heat and Air is a licensed electrical contractor in the State of Georgia. We can effortlessly pull the permits needed for your work. more importantly, the work performed will be safe for you and your home.
